Balangay
Balangay is a sea-faring vessel built of long wooden planks sewn together by bits, pegs, and natural materials indigenous to the place where the vessel was built. Utilized as trading boats, the balangay weaved through the Philippine islands during pre-colonial times. At some point in time, balangay also means a branch of a tree or an arm originating from a body of water. The term balangay came to also mean a small house, a dwelling place or a community.
There are a myriad of meanings and images drawn from the term “Balangay.” From pre-colonial Philippines to the present, the name balangay can conjure varied and colourful picture from our history and physical landscape.
